Engine Rebuild...

I'm in the early stages of looking into rebuilding my engine.
I'm looking at a maximum of 250-280bhp.

I need some advice really..

What am I best to do as a rebuild, just keep the same pistons or buy new standard ones? Is it worth getting uprated cams?
Or is it better to put forged pistons in even though i would never be using them to their full potential?

I'm really unsure and was looking for help and a definitive list of what i'd need to buy and get done to the engine to make it 'as new'

Good question, well as far as i'm aware its got 144k miles on it, and to be honest I want to rebuild the engine because it'd be fun! And it'll also mean ill have a nice brand 'newish' caR that I can keep and hug and stuff.. :)

haha your missus is going to kill you, you might be best pulling the enigne apart and checking it before you spend any money on it cause it might not need new pistons, how long has the lad had the car, is it still coming on tuesday

It sure is mate can't wait! Ahhh my missus doesnt understand.. haha. When it gets here i'll start taking it out of the car and then take it to bits. I just want to make sure i've got a good strong heart for my car.. cant have it breaking on me, should be fun rebuilding it as well.. you offerin to help? ;-)

Thats good then did he sort the problem with it after him washing the engine bay, yea i will help you rebuild the black one and the engine, haha should be fun seeing her face when the white one turns up .

I'd save the expense of forged internals if you're never going to be pushing the engine that hard.
I'd take a look at the bores when you take the engine apart; that might be the decision maker on what has to go back in (standard, over-sized, old ones with new rings on them). - I'm no expert, but that's how I understand it.

Cams are a tricky question; it's not quite the same as a N/A car so you can end-up compromising your off-boost performance to get the most out of the turbo... or generating less boost to give you more torque when you're not on boost.
I probably wouldn't bother with them for 250-280bhp, but if the old ones are worn you might as well.

Sounds like fun anyway...

Mark - I havent spoken to him since that so I don't know if he's sorted it or not. I told her about the White one, she wasn't bothered really but she now wants me to buy her a car because ive got three and shes got none!

Pobody - Cheers for the advice, i'm really not looking for big power so i'd be happy if i could keep the old pistons and put new rings on.. guess ill have to see when the engine arrives on tues

your a copper now mate you can afford to buy her 1 or give her the volvo

also been thinkin mate since its a uk car i should be able to get some bits through work

A completely standard engine will run 280bhp all day Paul - good luck with the project.
















You'll forge it eventually ;)

cant see the point of pulling it apart if theres nowt wrong with it, but...... if your going to do it anyway it'd be pointless not to stick a set of forgeys in arp bolts ect and then you know its going to take whatever in the future.

I have sent him a link to some cp pistons so hopefully he will buy them if the engine needs pistons.

I think hes lieing to himself that he will only take it to 280bhp, i know i did with my old one i said i would only go to 300bhp but ended up going more.

ChrisS - Your probs right, just lookin for ideads, it does sound fun to take it all apart and upgrade it though!

Mark - 280bhp will be more than enough for me mate, my old one was runnin around 240ish and that was quick enough! Dont forget i do drive a 2.0d C30.. hardly a rocket ship and I'll have a bike too for mega speed!!

set of pistons isnt going to set you back a great deal on top of what yuoud be doing anyway. Power is a disese , your never happy so best to get everything else in place ready.

I say if it aint broke dont fix it, if you want to build an engine why not buy one that needs a re build, can pick em up for 150 quid, have fun rebuilding it and then maybe transplant it or sell it on, then you have a spare engine or atleast dont loose much and still have fun in the proccess, and fill your house with lots of bits n bobs lol

Shroom hes only wanting to rebuild it cause the engine he is getting has done 144k and the previous owner does not know much about what it has had done, also its for a piece of mind that he has a good health engine in his full rebuilt car
