Engine build prep

I have a good block and a good head that I want to rebuild. The block is pritty much mint. Can still se factory hone marks. And head is also in good condition apart from a broken manifold stud.

All I have for the bottom end is Manley rods. But looking at pistons . Is it worth sticking with standard diameter pistions or get oversize pistons and and a rebore.

Also is it worth giving the head a slightest skim along with the block so it's all true? Also crank is in mint condition is it worth a polish?

Dont know what power I will make and not willing to chuck numbers about but will be using a 6262 precision turbo

As above with the crank. I'd stick to standard size pistons too if possible, no point going for bigger ones unless you need to. And I'd just get the block and head measured if it was me, again there's no point getting them machined if they're flat to begin with.

When you do get round to building it just make sure everything is 100% clean.

Yer I will do. Ill take it to machine shop n get them to check it over etc etc. just want it all true when I build :)

If your using something like a mls cometic Headgasket the head and blocks surface need to be perfect otherwise they don't seal properly,

even if you can still see oe honing marks I'd still get machine shop to go over the bore
I'd also have the block acid dipped this will ensure its all nice and clean and all the oil and water galleries are clean of any crap build up
all in my opinion

get the crank checked for hairline cracks (especially on bigend journals) they are notorious for it!
dont use a cometic mls h/g, use either cosworth, tomei or hks

There's nothing wrong with MLS gaskets in general, but Cometic don't make one for this variant of the SR20 (54C) so it doesn't seal and results in a failure. - They may say that it fits, but it doesn't.

I have thought about liners, but it's the machining I'd need to find a trusty machine shop. And what do you class as hard?

Already made mind up bout using a cosworth gasket :) and want to source some new head bolts too. Ill check Eric's performance for them

Talk with Danny (Red Reading) about liners for a trustworthy machinist. As I'm sure you know a 6262 is a 700bhp capable turbo, at those sort of power levels I doubt you'll find many people that haven't upgraded the liners.

Unless your names Rishi and you were in denial that a standard block will take that sort of power

Didn't realise we were talking those sort of figures

Yer I know what it's capable of the turbo I'm getting is of a friends evo, he got it mapped at tractive and it made 605. Took it to York, did 3 runs and now wants a bigger turbo its done less then 100 mile lolol the guy at tractive said there's lot more to come from the turbo but it had a problem with waste gate and wouldn't hold the power

im certainly not having that turbo and been apart of the 1bar club

For 700 you best have deep pockets, you will need, liners,cp pistons, rods, arp main bolts, the block will need decking and the caps decking and re line boring with the arp main bolts installed, the waterways will need sorting, crank will need polishing crack testing and balancing, rods will need balancing end to end and the pistons will need balancing and just about anything that rotates.............now head gasket choice will be dictated by how much the piston crown protrudes out of the block, cam lift will dictate if the pistons need valve reliefs machined into them..........this is before you get to the cylinder head.
