Drive shaft Question

So, at the end of the NS drive shaft the fits into the gear box, there is a ring where it looks like a snap ring should go. The OS drive shaft has one and its in. But the NS one never had one on it.

Stupid question : Does it it need a snap ring on the NS drive shaft end? I have been round most engineering works in town and managed to scrounge some snap rings and none of them are quite right. They all seem too thick d don't allow the shaft to click in to place. I've tried buying some off eBay from various other Nissan models of the same era but to no avail.

Any pointers are welcome.

Having taken my engine out 3 time im sure only one of the drive shafts has the snap ring on it .
