Dowty seals

Just a question about these 'dowty' seals, as referred to in another thread

When these seal, the two surfaces come together squashing the rubber seal only as far as the metal sleeve, and the metal sleeve then acts as a retainer to stop the rubber seal blowing out.

Have I got it correct, if so I can definitely see an advantage. Far better than a rubber 'O' ring.

I'd suggest it doesn't stop the rubber perishing over time, but it looks like it would seal against much higher pressure.

That is the idea of them ,they tend to be used in hydraulic applications and withstand 20bar pressure and upwards
