Dont want to cut out for Front mount

Hi,

Ive got a little question :D

I know that a front mount is a must have mod but i think the gtir looks pants with the bumper cut out.
Ive seen quite a few R,s that have had a front mount fitted with out cutting.
The thing what is getting me is that surly by not cutting the bumper you are restricting air flow through the intercooler.
Does everyone think that if you fit a F/M without cutting your bumper there are still sufficiant gains on the top mount .?
Also how much of a difference would there be with/without cutted bumper?

Hope someone can put me straight

I can't give you figures which may be what you want, but as far as common sense goes a front mount behind bumper slats would still increase flow to the 'cooler.

Thats what I'm going to do (eventually ).

Im not sure if it applys to all front mounts but with the Hybrid you do still have to cut the bumper slightly for it to clear the cooler (mainly at the bottom).
There are only really 2 bars left in front which i doubt will make much difference and i intend to move the number plate for track days

I fitted my front mount a week ago and cut out the bumper (i personally prefer the cut out look a lot lot more). To be honest it was enough of a bitch to fit with the bumper cut out never mind trying to keep the slats in there an my bumper ONLY just goes back on as it is. It can be done but you might still have to cut out some of the bumper at the back.

It will still be just as cool probably but the more air you can get to it the better!

If you do leave the front in be sure to trim the fla ps underneath where the brake ducts normally sit as i spent half an hour wondering why it wouldnt clear and then found they were catching on the pipework (passenger side)

 8) That looks sweet jon , just what im after doing

You say there is only two bars left but there is only 2 bars to start with , have i misunderstud you??

Yeah I took off both brake ducts and still had to cut away some of the bumper at the back to clear the pipework on the passenger side also

Not to mention gettin rid of the washer bottle - do you need it for an MOT? I'm gonna put it in the boot eventually or modify the one I've got to be a lot smaller.

I still need to mount the radiator expansion bottle properly aswell as theres hardly any room for it to sit right.

Yeah you leave them on mate! Its mainly the bottom ducting which guides the air up over and the little vertical fins between the big bars and the fla ps beneath the brake ducting.
As for washer bottle i've yet to put mine in the boot too! Think i'll just pay someone cos if i dont it'll stay like that

I was thinking about mounting it in the same place but cutting it to make it a lot smaller and somehow make it watertight and a new way to fill it but it would probably just be easier to put it in the boot but i'm not sure how to go about it. It would be easy enough gettin the connectors to the boot but then where do you connect hoses at the rear and what do you do witht he two open hoses still at the front?

I aint done it yet but i'd say use the rear one that is already through the car for your front one's and make a new one for the rear washer!

Back on topic

Does anyone rekon with the number plate moved to the right of the bumper that there would still be way sufficiant air going through the cooler .ie:with out cutting the centre bars out:

I think obviously there will be some loss of air flow because of the centre bars, but is the loss enough to warrent me hacking the bumper bars off??.

The intercooler is still far colder just sitting in the front bumper than it is on top of the engine, a few small bars infront is not going to cause any loss of efficiency

Remember, there are six or so bars (horizontal and vertical) in the centre vent...

I reckon that even with the number plate left in you'll still get a better result than top mount.

If its good enough for the rad its good enough for an fmic?

Hi,

I run with a stage 2 Norris Designs Front mount and air conn behind the standard bumper with no probs, with no ill effect,
With the bumper cut or not cut it makes very little difference to the air flow accross it. I like the 'normal' look,

if you can call it that
