Dodgy Fuel gauge

Yesterday, when I went to turn my car ignition off, the petrol gauge dropped off the scale, A couple of times since whilst driving the gauge has lifted from the bottom point, however it has not returned to level it should be showing, and now it isn't rising at all. all other gauges are working correctly apart from the fuel.
If any of you guys have some ideas, on where I should be checking first it would be greatly appreciated.
Also I'm desparate for a replacement cable for the passenger window?

Take the cluster out and check the plugs on the back

mine had this problem, it was the plug in the boot on top of the tank, jeff.
