Hey all, i went to a rolling road day on saturday with my dad who is in a mitsubishi evo cllub. Any way was talkin to some1 there who had owned a pulsar and he has kinda put me of. He said that the brakes are crap and that it cnt go round corners, and that he had a 600 pound nismo clutch what went after one launch. I was thinkin about gettin an evo 3 but cnt afford the insurance.

I love the gti-r a think its a beautifull car and i would still love to by my first one after new year. Could this bloke have just had a bit of bad luck, or are these common problems. Just need a confdence boost cus when i by this car will be my most expensive purchase and im going to spend quite a bit of money on it, just hope il be bying sumfin decent...

Cheers

Sounds like the guy cant drive for shit, the cars are abit crap at handeling as standard, i never had problems though, it was **** end out rather than understeer.

The clutch was probably installed badly or again driven by a monkey who doesnt know how to launch.

Just get one you wont regret it, just make sure you give it a good check over before you buy and try get one off a respectable member on here.

Oh and yes the brakes are shite, good luck.

The STANDARD brakes are shite, plain dangerous. But they can be easily upgraded (most already have) and aren't so bad with 4 pot calipers and bigger disks.

If you were at an Evo rr day then they are bound to be slightly biased and exaggerate things, ie "my £600 clutch failed after one launch"

As said above, do plenty of homework and make sure you buy a good one, a cheap one may look tempting, but can end up costing you alot in the long run.

Don't forget to take into account running costs either, as they are thirsty bitches, cost alot to insure and road tax etc etc

 Are you blind?

Beautiful isn't a word I'd use to describe one, they are evil looking things though, which is why I like mine.

brakes aren't the best, but I haven't not stopped in time yet!

Load of cr@p about the clutch. My Helix has taken plenty of launches no problem.

As above, buy from an OC member - that way all the money has already been spent. Spending an extra 1 to 2K on the car will save you 3k in the long run on repairs and sensors!

Dont listen to anyone regarding these cars make your own mind up lol.

some little pointers i have learned

As a pulsar owner you may have a job as an accountant or a general pencil pusher but once you have owned them a year or 2 you become a full time mechanic with them engine drops gearbox changes.

Like you say your going to spend money on it, thats the main thing you will do with them even if it doesnt work.

The brakes are shite i mean 220bhp and a single pot caliper you can pic 4 pots up for £500 that will more than stop the car.

A clutch will only last as long depending on the way you drive, look on the bright side the gearbox will go before the clutch lol.

But as said get one you wont regret it.

Just treat it with respect. !!

nah wnt rag it about gettin a 2.0l escort for that. It will be used as a daily driver but not given stick all the time. My dad owns an evo 4 pushin about 440 bhp, and when i go round to help him work on it. Im like i wanna car thats like this, and wanna car i can spend money on to make better and be something i can be proud of, thinkin i made it like this and other people like it to.

My standard brakes were doing fine running 12.4 1/4s, and with mintex pads are still doing fine. I wouldn't trust them for a track day tho.

Don't forget the Gtir was only built from 91-94, so even the newest are 13 years old. Current Evos (Scoobies etc) have a damn site more developement in them so they would piss all over a Gtir in the handling department, pick a model the same age and the gap wont be so big.

my best car yet, its allowed me to work on it and improve things over and above standard, use newly developed parts from both your normal suppliers and other R owners. The sense of achievement in keeping the R on the road and be able to drive it every day of the week with no major issues, improve the handling so it sticks to the road like glue and generally feel as though your driving a go kart lol.

The handling in my opinion is far better than any other car (not in the terms your thinking) it is extremely raw like a go kart, plenty of feedback and feel, you are part of the car, especially on track.

I can imagine the evo and scooby owners coming off a track and feeling ok, happy but not like the feeling you get when you come off the track in an R (glad to be alive lol)

You still get the looks wherever you go as the R is still relatively rare to see nowadays even with all that have made the journey from japan, you dont get that with an evo or scooby (or not to the same extent)

If you are able to afford the maintenance costs and do most of the jobs yourself or with your dad in order to save money, go for it. If not then leave it as it will only end up being broken which is a damn shame for a car like this.

Good luck in your decision.

Ant.
