A couple of questions

Hi im new to the site and the ownership of a Pulsar just would like to know what is safe and what is not as im not familiar with Pulsars.

The spec of the car is

Front mount intercooler
Cone filter
Walbro Fuel Pump
Adjustable Fuel Presure Regulator
D2 Coil overs
Turbo Technics Garret stage 2 Highbred Turbo
(Turbo Details here )http://www.turbotechnics.com/docs/turbo/s173.htm
Sard Boost controller
Strut braced front and rear
3" Strait through system

The car was previousely dynode at 337bhp but was running lean at the top and since then the walbro fuel pump and Adjustable fuel presure reg has been added ( Fuel presure set at 3bar With Vac pipe removed )

The boost back then when on the dyno was around 15- 18 psi but the previouse owner has turned the boost down to around 8 - 9 psi.

I have also found that there is a lot of lag and that is down to the size of the turbo trim is there anything i can do to help get is spooling quicker ? Headwork ? Cams ? ECU ?.

Another thing is what would you consider a safe boost limit with the above mods.

Thanks in advance
Marty

Also, does a T3 start spooling a bit later (but generate more flow) than a T2 series?
A ball bearing turbo will spool quicker than a thrust bearing too.

pipe work etc does make a difference but u cant jus put the parts in expecting it to work accordingly u'l need to get it mapped aswell bigger injectors etc. meanin ECU u got stock internals?

If you turn the boost back to what the other guy had i.e. 15-18psi, that will remove the lag

14.5psi is 1bar which for the R is a relatively safe pressure to run. Id still check the fueling for that though to ensure the car is running correctly.

That is a good output considering the relatively low boost at 15psi, id be happy with that tbh.

Uprated brakes if you dont have them already. Personally I would just run it around the 300bhp mark, anymore and your really asking for things it go bang, which means going down the forged internals route which is a tad expensive....been there and got the T-shirt im afraid!

Good figures considering the mods!

I'd agree the comments above. IMO the 300 to 315 bhp area is the one to be in with standard internals and standard ECU. Try for more and internals will bail and standard ECU will not handle it. I'd now improve the handling aspects of the car with AR bars, brakes etc.

Best of luck, enjoy and keep us posted!!!

It has D2 coilovers and adjustable droplinks all round. Strut brace front and rear. Would you say the turbo i have on there is overkill then ?

Thanks for the replies guys

decent brakes is what I'd get next if I was back at your level of mods.
Whats a good setup to go for i know on like the scoobys we would upgrade from like 2 pots to 4 pots of a late date classic of 4 pot brembo's of a newage. Is there another model of nissan the brakes can come of or is there only aftermarket ?

You could go aftermarket and go for a set of Wilwoods for cheapness if fast road driving is all your doing. You can also get Hi-specs, Ap's, Brembos, K-sports, the list goes on depending on how good a setup you want and how much cash you can afford to spend.

You can get 200sx calipers to fit with work, someone on here sells the kits for about the £400 mark if my memory serves me right.

You can also get evo 3 calipers to fit with clio discs with a bit of jiggery pockery.

Comes down to what you budget is and what you can get hold of, search is your friend tho, all the answers are there

I wouldnt say your turbo is overkill, it certainly wont be anywhere near its full potential at the circa 300bhp mark but it does give the future scope to up the power. Only issue your going to find with the uprated turbo you have is lag, but its swings and roundabouts!

as kf79gtir said! fmic!

big is not good, long pipe run not good, cams will make it worse!
what you need to do is if you have an ebay style jobbie fitted with 4'' core is take the thing off and stick a smaller core unit on with short pipe run. this will cut down lag immensely

something ive found out recently which is quite interesting and a fact, is that the way power is delivered is sometimes very confusing and deceptive.

fot instance: ive now driven many many standard cars with top mounts running standard boost to 1.2 bar and there quick off the mark and spoolup very quickly (especially on a cold day)

now: take the same car and add an ebay fmic and the car will feel faster as theres lag being created, so when the turbo comes on song its a more of a kick in the pants effect untill you change gear again then the same again, this gives the impression that the car is moving fast.

now: you put the two cars together on a timed run with the same driver and i can tell you that infact the quickest car will be the one that feels slower:lol: this is because its faster spooling and does not have so much of a put you back in seat feel as the one with lag, but over a set route or circuit its definately gonna be faster.

does that make sense :-D
prime example is the rb22 models no big put back in seat effect but spoolup like a naturally aspirated car on steroids, look at fast guys time on the 1/4;-)

Thanks for the reply guys im not sure what intercooler it is as it was on the car when i got it. So by the sounds of things i may be better of seeing if someone wants to do a deal with my turbo with someone who wants a bigger unit to get the full potential out of it what Turbo would you say im better of going for

Cheers

tbh i dont know anything about those turbos as ive never come across one before, put a pic on here of your fmic kit and il tell you what it is, before you start thinking about turbo swaps or anything drastic like that!

I have checked the paperwork for the car and the intercooler was supplied and fitted by Norris Designs and it does not say what make it is
