Speedo problems!!

Hi all,

when i bought the car it had been converted to mph, the annoying thing is they never set the recorded km's to mph, so I am clocking miles on top of km's now, so it looks like the car has done 94,000 miles! Also the speedo goes off at 115(ish) and wont come back on till your speed drops back down to 10 mph(ish). This is well annoying! So ant got a clue wot top speed I do! Any clues anyone? I am in Manchester, so if theres a local specialist near by, let me know,

cheers....Moved to problem solving-skiddusmarkus

I fit these speedo boxes on a regular basis and have come across this problem before, but only on skylines.
The most likely cause for this is that the live or earth feed has been sourced poorly at the back of the dash (such as from an indicator live or earth), as opposed to a good earth or ign live.
I have also come across convertion boxes that dont cover a broad enough wavelength for high speedo readings.

Hope this is of some help.

Cheers junior,

can i do anything about it? It just seems funny that the speedo goes off at the jap limiter settings, coincidence?

I would say this is coincidence, the speedo’s that I’ve seen do this before all do it at over 100mph.
Ok… here is how to check the wiring of the speedo converter, you can remove your dash relatively easily?!!!! as long as you have some technical ability.
The plastic trim around the clocks has a load of screws and a couple of clips holding it to the dashboard, I think 2 of these screws are behind the trim around your stereo/heater controlls.
You will also probably need to disconnect a cable which runs from the heater vent on the n/s of your clocks to the heater behind the n/s of the centre console (behind stereo/heater controlls), you should see this cable if you wiggle it around and look in from the driver footwell. The looped lower end of this cable will slide of the heater arm, and the cable sleeve is secured with a metal clip.
With the surround removed you should now be able to undo some more screws and unclip a couple of multi plugs and remove your clocks. Take care when doing this as the speedo converter wires may be soldered to the circuit board on the rear of the clocks.
The converter will probably have four wires:
- signal in
- signal out
- ign live
- earth
Check the security of these wires, and where they are connected to.
If you look at the rear of the speedo head there will be four screws securing it to the circuit board/casing, these are generally where the converter wires will be connected to either directly, or to the corresponding wires in the loom side of the clocks multi plugs.
The four screws will probably be marked near them on the circuit board with ign (+), earth (E), sig (S) or (SI), and (P), your converter wires should feed live and earth from these points and interrupt the signal (S or SI) feed.

Good luck

ok mate i have the same problem every time i hit 110 it goes of and wont come back untill after i slow down to 20 mph if i accelerate slowly i can get to 130mph befor it cuts of. i have put this down to the converter beeing crap.
if anyone knows any better converters or a way to solve it let us know

I recon this problem is down to the wiring of the converter as opposed to the converters themselves, as all of the cars I have come across which have this fault in particular, I have sorted by re-wiring the converters with a reliable 12v ign live and good earth feed (to the car body if necessary). These cars have then been tested to speeds in excess of 140mph on a 2post ramp, and presumably by the car owners since then.
I would advise anyone to try this before replacing their converter.

my power supply seemed ok when i checked it. It has been taked of the back of the speedo/rev counter unit where there is a positive and negative. I have got to take the dash out soon any way so my have another look at it cheers.

i got a different set of clocks put them in problem went but then did a high speed run today and something went pop and now dont get anything to dash etc (see my other thread for details)

but ill let u know how it turns out im gonna do some testing on my dials to see what the problem with them is as its probably a simple fix once there out

ill keep u all informed
