Exhaust sealant

Hi,

I didnt know until now that u can use ordinary bathroom silicone sealant on exhaust systems!

Thought the guy who I bought the exhaust off was having a laugh, until i did a google search.

Anybody else tried this?

my mate wh owns a garage uses silicone sealent and it looks the same as bathroom sealent, JP Exhausts across the road uses a special black high temp silicone sealent that is top quality, but no doubt expensive.

What's wrong with using that fire cement stuff? Doesn't cost too much really...

Personal i wouldn't use it as it doesn't dry as hard as proper exhaust sealer which dry's hard where as silicone sealant is more rubbery when you touch.

Gaz get down to ces on bumper's lane cost you about £3 for a tube i know your broke but even you can afford this you skin flint lol:doh:

Right off down to CES tomorrow morning get me a tube!!

Quick question on fitting the new zorst over the rear sub frame. Only got access to a trolley jack and axle stands, so instead of doin an Andy Chan, im thinking of doing something Cojack mentioned to me on the phone the other day.

How about jacking the rear up loosening the bolts for the sub frame, then lowing to ground, totally undo me nuts  on the side i need to lower, then slowly jack up on the body jacking point creating a larger gap between chassis and sub frame, then slide exhaust through.

Or has that been tried before and failed? maybe do as Cojack said to me jack up rear support on axle stands then lower sub frame on trolley jack.

I can c this being a right pain in the smelly hole, oh well somethings else to add to my CV.

Cheers

I tried to change my back half to match the 3"front pipe had the car 2 foot of the ground all round still could not get it of.I did not fancy droping the subframe so will have it done by the mot station in march .

Its a case of havig to for me, already binned my old exhaust, im sure i can do it, got the engine out last year complete with downpipe and driveshafts still attached :)

Quick question, if you have a 5" tail pipe, remove it and put say a 3" one on, would this make the exhaust note quieter?

The system is a straight through stainless, Blue Flame

Forgot to add, no back box on the system, just 2.5" then a 5" tail pipe, not a slash cut a weird roll in type, reminds me of the Peco Big Bore Range!!

I think the 3" is slightly quieter because the 5" can reverberates and amplifies the sound. If you tap it with a spanner it rings
Just ask yourself how tolerant your neighbours are

what would be the best exhaust paste to use? Is there brands better than each other? and can you just use the paste as a gasket or do you need to get the real gaskets as well?
