Come on lads, when your all trying to save weight of the cars there is only one battery, Varley Red Top 25 its 10lb lighter than the standard battery and you can mount it anyway you want, side, upright etc etc its about the size of a raido CD player and is £79 for Merlin Motor Sport.
Cheers
Phil
PS my standard Pulsar Batt is 22lb in weight. 25=12lb

Cool, I know what I'm buying next time then :-D

Just out of interest, I just found the Red Top 25 slightly cheaper at £75 + VAT at Ralley Designs.

Ralley Designs

I will call DMS on Monday to see if the above is any good for a road/track car used ocasionally, or are they really ONLY designed for a track car that has minimal ancilleries.

I contacted DMS and they recomended the 25 althought you could go for the 30.
As long as you keep them charged they are ok.
I always switch my car/battery of after use anyway and this will keep one of these batteries in top condition.
Got mine from Merlin because I was close and in works transport so did not pay for postage etc. he he he

So assuming they take a charge from the alternater whilst in use like a conventional battery they can be used in a raod car........

presumably they just don't like a continuos drain from something like an alarm system if the car is left standing for extended periods of time..........

if the car was out of use for a few days and the battery were left in use, just running an alarm system and there charge was a little low when you came to start the car, will they re-charge from "just going for a run", like a conventional battery, or do you have to put them on a drip feed from a special charger............ I wonder

Yes they can take the alternator charge,

Its better to switch them off between use but a few days will not matter.

They can be charged with a normal battery charger but not boosted.

Cheers

Phil

Its also a pretty cheap way of loosing 10lb off the car and placing the remainder in a better position.

Been running mine for a week or so now, no problems starts fine. Fits in a bracket I made into the glove compartment so I keep the cable runs nice and short.
Switch it off when not in use.

Raced with the new battery all weekend, stoping and starting the car up to a dozen times in the day with no problems at all. Seems to have been a good way of loosing 10lb of weight off the car.

I would say no....its a battery that preferes to be disconected between use, leaving it like that is ok but not conected as it will slowly discharge.

Phil
PS been using it with no problems so far.

Just got a special charger for the Red Top ready for the Winter, was told that these batteries dont like to be left out in a cold garage etc. I take my car off the road for the winter anyway. So will remover the redtop and store in a warm room and keep it topped up thru the winter. If your thinking of using it on a road/drag car could be a good idea to do the same as I am doing.
Used it all summer with no problems at all.

I am thinking this would not pass the old MOT due to the fact the battery could explode and being as its in the "cabin" would make for a rather interesting accident a bit like how the fuel tanks on some old cars used to be behing the back seats and now below the car on the outside. Obviously in the boot it would be ok as acid will only go as far as the seat/parcel shelf.

But great info on this little battery guys i am in need of a battery but i can get normal one for about £30 from a wholesalers hummm do I or dont I ????????????? :?

Ohh and a optimate SP 3 charger is what you need in your garage £30-£40 charges in 4-5 stages includes rings for the terminals so you can just roll into garage and open bonnet and connect connection block and forget about for months designed for bikes which have sensitive batteries.

I pass full RAC race scrutineering every weekend I race and they are a lot more concerned with saftey than an average MOT garage. (which I also passed with no problems at all)
As I said its a REDTOP battery so there is no liquid acid inside it its a gell, you can cut a corner off one of these bateries and they still work ...plus its caged IN the glove compartment with the front still over it, so it does have another layer between you and the battery, which you dont acually need as the single seater drivers often have these fitted under there legs!!! so as far as saftey is concerened they are 100% better/safer than a normal lead acid battery.
As I have said this is ment for people who want to save the last bit of weight from the car not your normal road driver. They have to be looked after to make sure they are in tip top condition. Can be a pain but loosing some 10lb in weight is worth it if your that serious.
As for charging. a REDTOP, MUST be disconected from the car and charged as instructed by DMS using the CORRECT charger. I have had friends try using other cheaper chargers and they have ruined the batteries very quickly.
Its a mod that is ment for anybody who is serious about using the car in competition not a normal road car with ICE and alarms etc. So your normal £30 lead acid battery will be better for your average Pulsar.

Ahh did'nt realise until after i had posted it was a gel battery yes that kinda changes things ohh and the "cheaper charger" as you call it is made by a world leader in charging systems the charger has more auto charge levels and charges more types of battery including gel and can even disulphate unlike any other on the market!
