what turbo?

As per title. I currently have the engine out. Everything in bits and want to upgrade the turbo. I'm looking for something i can just bolt on that requires no mucking about. Does anyone know what i can purchase that's better than the standard turbo and as said, just bolts on? I plan to run roughly between 350hp to 400 i suppose.

You'll need a gt2871r or gt3071r turbo to get that kind of power, but like I'm finding out there's a few other things that need doing.
Arp conrod bolts, injectors etc.

I'm looking for 380bhp ish and that requires a gt2871r but looks like I have to do a few little mods to make work.

According to the Garrett website,

The GT2871R is apparently rated for 280-475hp
The GT3071R is rated for 280-480hp

And from the ATP Turbo website, the GTX2871R is flow rated up to 560hp potential flow.

The hp rating and ease of fitment compared to the 3071 are why I went the route I did, plus my AM Performance downpipe will fit the GTX2871R with no modification.

I'd probably go with the 2871 if you want an upgraded version of the original turbo, but the 3071 if you're chasing power. - I was watching an episode of MCM the other day, and they made the point that a new turbo of about the same size as OEM is so much more advanced than one from 1990.

It's also worth thinking about whether you want power (which tends to be a function of flow) or torque (which is a function of pressure). - So you can make more power at lower boost by slowing more air with a 3071, or you can make more torque by running lots of boost with less flow with a 2871.

Obviously I'm simplifying that a bit (to the limit of my own understanding), and there's overlap between compressor maps.

Ooo, i think i want some of that power low down from the 3071. I'm assuming it won't run out of breath by the time it gets to high revs.

More power is more fuel, you have to keep the AFR correct. My rally car runs a 3071 with an inlet restrictor (rules)
and gets 280 on the standard injectors. As soon as you remove the restrictor it obviously produces more, however the std injectors
are nearly maxed out.... at high revs/power potentially the AFR will lean and it'll all end in tears..

I’ve got 2 cars here with both turbos, the 3071r is the better turbo all round

On an other note I have a 3071r Turbo here for sale

Are you saying its the better all round turbo? or in every department its a better turbo?

As per the OP, a 3071 is not a bolt on application!

A 2871 is a direct replacement with the correct GTiR housing - NOT 200SX

Actually I probably wouldn't have either these days as the 3071 I had fell to pieces! Make sure you go for the metal bearing cage upgrade if you get a Garrett as without it it's a lottery how long it'll last.

When I ordered one, mine came with the 200SX inlet, which replaced with my original GTiR inlet aluminum housing.

I've never had to fit a 3071, but know space is very restricted and its not a straight swap, but someone with more knowledge could answer that better.

When I added my 2871, even at standard boost, I did notice more lag with the turbo (around 4500rpm) as it came on boost compared to the standard unit. I've never had the dam thing over 1.0bar of boost, but when Jim and I mapped it at Oulton Park, the added torque, stripped 4th gear.
I'm keen to see what it will make or deliver at 1.6/1.8bar, but I've got to get the bloody thing back on the road, but those "figures" quoted are, personally, unrealistic and a healthy 380 - 400 seem to be the target area with GTiR's using at 2781.

Thought a GTX2871, sounds like it could offer much more?

Did you experience slower spooling?

My standard one was spooling by 2.5k

I had a 3071 with the bigger .86 exhaust housing and used to get full boost by then or possibly a couple hundred rpm lower on a standard engine, when I put it on my 2.3 engine it was about 3700 rpm.

For anything over 370/380bhp I reckon the .64 exhaust housing 3071 would be better, you might want to do a search though as i think there were possibly issues with boost creep that needed the wastegate hole enlarging.

Or you could look at the GTX series or Borg Warner EFR turbo's which make Garrett GT series turbo's look ancient now!

The 3071r is near enough bolt on, it’s not an issue to fit, can be very tight to block but that’s about it,
You can tell just driving it flows better, from low down and through the revs, I Wouldn’t buy the 2871r

Yeah, but I run the .86 housing which might be contributing to the lag, plus Jim and I were in the early stages of mapping the car at 1.0bar.

So with more time and timing adjustments, that lag might have come down?

But since its been off the road for 3 years, I've not had the chance to continue that work.
